Um programa de combate \u00e0 desertifica\u00e7\u00e3o, na Regi\u00e3o do Sahel, na \u00c1frica, est\u00e1 mostrando resultados contra a mudan\u00e7a clim\u00e1tica e a favor de investidores. A afirma\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 do estudo liderado pela Organiza\u00e7\u00e3o das Na\u00e7\u00f5es Unidas para Alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o e Agricultura (FAO) sobre o impacto do projeto Grande Muralha Verde (GGW, na sigla em ingl\u00eas).
Para cada d\u00f3lar investido, houve um retorno de US$ 1,20 em projetos de conten\u00e7\u00e3o da degrada\u00e7\u00e3o que foram do Senegal no oeste, ao Djibuti no leste. Em alguns casos, os resultados variavam de US$ 1,1 a US$ 4,4.
O coordenador da Divis\u00e3o de Florestas da FAO, Moctar Sacande, afirma que \u00e9 preciso mudar a ret\u00f3rica sobre a regi\u00e3o. Para ele, \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio mostrar que apesar de um solo seco e \u00e1rido, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel restaurar o solo e obter lucros.
O estudo utilizou dados por sat\u00e9lite e no terreno para mapear a degrada\u00e7\u00e3o ambiental entre 2001 e 2018. A partir da\u00ed, comparou-se os custos e os benef\u00edcios de restaura\u00e7\u00e3o do solo com base em diferentes cen\u00e1rios adaptados aos contextos locais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O reflorestamento e restaura\u00e7\u00e3o neste cintur\u00e3o, que se estende por oito mil km\u00b2 em todo o continente, j\u00e1 est\u00e3o em andamento. As comunidades est\u00e3o plantando esp\u00e9cies de \u00e1rvores resilientes e resistentes como a Ac\u00e1cia Senegal, que gera a goma-ar\u00e1bica: uma resina natural usada em bebidas e como emulsificante em alimentos.
O plantio na Grande Muralha Verde tamb\u00e9m contempla outras esp\u00e9cies como a \u00e1rvore Gao ou Faidherbia albida<\/em>, que ajuda a fertilizar o solo para o cultivo de alimentos b\u00e1sicos como pain\u00e7o e para forragem animal.
Com o apoio t\u00e9cnico da FAO, mais de 500 comunidades est\u00e3o tendo melhores oportunidades de gera\u00e7\u00e3o de renda e seguran\u00e7a alimentar. Com seu potencial de sequestro de carbono e restaura\u00e7\u00e3o da biodiversidade e sua \u00eanfase nos benef\u00edcios socioecon\u00f4micos para as comunidades empobrecidas que habitam a regi\u00e3o, a Grande Muralha Verde abrange as principais \u00e1reas de mitiga\u00e7\u00e3o, adapta\u00e7\u00e3o e resili\u00eancia do clima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grande Muralha Verde da \u00c1frica
<\/span><\/strong>A \u00e1rea total que o programa abrange permanece limitada, tendo alcan\u00e7ado apenas quatro milh\u00f5es de hectares de uma meta de 100 milh\u00f5es, de acordo com o estudo. Um total de cerca de 20 bilh\u00f5es de d\u00f3lares foi prometido internacionalmente para apoiar a amplia\u00e7\u00e3o do programa, incluindo US $ 14,3 bilh\u00f5es na c\u00fapula \u201cOne Planet para a biodiversidade\u201d, realizada em Paris em janeiro deste ano, e US $ 1 bilh\u00e3o do fundador da Amazon, Jeff Bezos na rec\u00e9m-conclu\u00edda confer\u00eancia clim\u00e1tica COP26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Segundo ele, a menos que parte do financiamento seja entregue com urg\u00eancia, pode ser tarde demais para o plantio captar as chuvas limitadas esperadas em junho e julho.
Outro grande desafio est\u00e1 nos conflitos armados que permeiam a regi\u00e3o. O estudo descobriu que cerca de 50% da \u00e1rea de terra envolvida est\u00e1 atualmente inacess\u00edvel por raz\u00f5es de seguran\u00e7a. Ainda assim, as interven\u00e7\u00f5es de restaura\u00e7\u00e3o de terras ainda representam uma proposta de neg\u00f3cio vi\u00e1vel, dizem os autores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
