Usando ve\u00edculos operados remotamente em uma miss\u00e3o cient\u00edfica para localizar e descrever novas esp\u00e9cies, pesquisadores da expedi\u00e7\u00e3o do Schmidt Ocean Institute conseguiram capturar imagens impressionantes de uma aranha marinha rastejando no fundo do mar. A expedi\u00e7\u00e3o do Schmidt Ocean Institute \u00e0s Ilhas Sandwich do Sul, uma cadeia de ilhas vulc\u00e2nicas perto da Ant\u00e1rtida, que \u00e9 uma das \u00e1reas mais remotas do mundo, busca localizar e descrever novas esp\u00e9cies que vivem nessas \u00e1guas geladas. As aranhas marinhas, tamb\u00e9m conhecidas como picnogon\u00eddeos, s\u00e3o primas distantes dos aracn\u00eddeos que conhecemos. Essas criaturas podem ter envergaduras (o tamanho total com as pernas estendidas) de at\u00e9 cerca de 50 cent\u00edmetros \u2014 quase o dobro do tamanho das maiores aranhas terrestres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O gigantismo dos seres do fundo do mar \u00e9 particularmente prevalente em dire\u00e7\u00e3o aos polos, onde temperaturas congelantes facilitam metabolismos mais lentos. Representantes do Schmidt Ocean Institute descreveram as aranhas do mar como “abundantes” e “abundantemente grandes” nas regi\u00f5es polares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Segundo o instituto, existem cerca de 1.500 esp\u00e9cies de aranhas marinhas conhecidas pela ci\u00eancia hoje e provavelmente muitas outras ainda a serem descobertas.
